Negative Scanning

Our Professional 120 Film Scanning Process

Every medium format negative scan starts with careful preparation and professional handling to ensure flawless results:

  • Cleaning: Our technicians remove dust and debris using precision air compressors to protect the film surface.
  • Scanning: We use Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED and 9000 ED units for high-resolution negative scanning with full tonal range.
  • Editing: Cropping, exposure, and orientation are adjusted in scanning software before saving each image.
  • Labeling: Files are named sequentially (e.g., FarmHouse_001.jpg) and organized to match your original folders.
  • Quality Check: A second technician reviews each image for orientation, clarity, and color accuracy before final approval.

This process ensures that every project meets our professional negative scanning standards for medium format photo preservation and long-term digital archiving.

Why Scan Negatives Instead Of Prints?

Scanning directly from film delivers far greater image quality than scanning from prints. Prints are merely reproductions of negatives and lose detail, color range, and contrast.

By digitizing from the original film, we achieve medium format photo preservation with complete light and color data intact. Our dedicated equipment applies Digital ICE technology to reduce dust and scratches, producing crisp, accurate scans that stay true to the original image. The result is a professional, detailed reproduction that allows you to preserve film negatives and enjoy them for decades in digital form.

Manual Color Correction Vs. Image Restoration

Film fades, yellows, and ages over time, but our manual color correction services can help recover what was lost. Our technicians manually adjust each scan to correct faded tones, fix color casts, and bring back accurate whites and blacks. Unlike automated filters, this process involves evaluating each image individually to preserve natural contrast and skin tones.

For heavily damaged film, our image restoration service goes a step further. We can repair scratches, folds, color blotches, and even reconstruct missing areas when possible. Using Adobe Photoshop and specialized plugins, our 120 format digitization experts bring your medium format negatives back to life while maintaining all original data.

High-Resolution Digital Output & File Options

You can choose to receive your medium format negative scans in JPEG or TIFF format, depending on your goals:

  • JPEG: Ideal for easy sharing and everyday use.
  • TIFF: Preferred for archiving, printing, or professional editing.

All scans include dust removal, exposure correction, cropping, and proper image rotation. You can select from multiple resolutions up to 4000 DPI, perfect for creating large prints or building a detailed 120 film digital archive.

Archival Storage That Lasts

Once your scans are complete, we store your digital files on 100-year archival DVDs, a thumb drive, or a hard drive, whichever you prefer. These formats provide a secure digital backup for your collection. For long-term preservation and future access, we always recommend maintaining at least one off-site copy of your archive.

FAQs About 120 Format Negative Scanning

What Resolution Should I Choose For My 120 Film Scans?

We recommend 3000–4000 DPI for archiving and reprints. This resolution captures every fine detail and allows you to enlarge images without loss of quality.

Can You Convert Negatives To Both JPEG & TIFF Formats?

Yes. You can choose one format at no additional charge or request both for a small per-image fee.

Do You Clean My Film Before Scanning?

Yes. Each film strip is gently cleaned with compressed air to remove dust and particles before scanning.

Why Should I Scan Negatives Instead Of Prints?

Negatives preserve more detail and color information than prints. Scanning from the original film provides the sharpest, most accurate digital reproduction possible.

How Do You Store The Final Images?

Your digital files are delivered on archival DVDs, thumb drives, or external hard drives. We also offer upload options for online delivery.
