Negative Scanning

Our 35mm Negative Scanning Process

Every 35mm negative preservation project begins with professional preparation and careful handling to ensure outstanding results. You can learn more about our full negative scanning service for additional options and details.

  • Cleaning: Our technicians remove dust and particles using compressed air to protect the film surface.

  • Scanning: We use Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED and 9000 ED scanners for high-resolution photo scanning and accurate color reproduction.

  • Editing: Cropping, exposure, and orientation are adjusted before finalizing each image.

  • Labeling: Files are named sequentially (for example, FamilyTrip_001.jpg) and organized into folders that match your original layout.

  • Quality Check: A second technician reviews each scan for clarity, orientation, and color accuracy before completion.

This double-check process ensures professional results that meet our standards for high-quality 35mm photography digitization.

Why Scan Negatives Instead Of Prints

Scanning from negatives provides sharper, more detailed results than scanning from printed photos. Prints contain less data and a smaller range of color and light, while negatives retain all the original information captured by the camera.

Our dedicated film scanners and Digital ICE technology remove dust and surface defects, giving you crisp, vivid results that stay true to the original photo. The result is a clean, lifelike image that brings your memories back to life in stunning digital quality.

Manual Color Correction

Film color fades and shifts over time, creating unwanted tints or flat tones. Our manual color correction service restores the original look of your photos through careful, hands-on adjustments. Technicians identify the brightest and darkest points in each image and reset them to true white and black for balanced contrast. This process neutralizes yellow or red casts and brings back natural color depth that automatic software can’t match.

Each image is evaluated individually to ensure that the most important visual areas are corrected accurately. If your negatives look dark or faded, our team can enhance a few samples first. This lets you preview the results before we adjust the rest of your order.

Image Restoration

When negatives are scratched, folded, or discolored, our image restoration service can repair and recover them. Using advanced tools such as Adobe Photoshop, specialized plug-ins, and professional retouching techniques, our Los Angeles film digitizing experts can remove surface defects, repair color blotches, and even reconstruct small missing sections.

Every repair is performed with precision to maintain the original image integrity. The result is a clean, clear restoration that protects your memories without compromising their authenticity.

File Options & Output Quality

Your 35mm negatives can be saved in JPEG or TIFF format, depending on your goals:

  • JPEG: Ideal for easy sharing and online use.
  • TIFF: Recommended for archiving, printing, or editing.

All scans include cropping, rotation, and exposure correction. You can also upgrade to 4000 DPI resolution for large, crystal-clear prints and long-term archive-quality digitization.

Long-Term Preservation & Delivery Options

Once your scans are complete, you can receive them on 100-year archival DVDs, thumb drives, or hard drives. These options provide a reliable digital archive for 35mm photos that can be easily backed up and shared with family.

For the best results, we recommend storing at least one backup in a separate location to safeguard your memories for the future.
