Photo Scanning

Photo scanning is the process of converting printed photographs into digital images using specialized scanning equipment. This creates a high-resolution digital file of each photo, preserving the image in a format that can be viewed, shared, printed, or archived without risking damage to the original. Scanning is especially valuable for aging or fragile prints that may fade, tear, or deteriorate over time.

At its core, photo scanning allows you to protect and preserve your personal history. Whether you’re digitizing old family photo albums, restoring faded pictures, or organizing decades of prints into an easy-to-access digital library, the process gives your memories a new life in a modern format. With professional-grade scanners and proper handling, scanned images retain sharp detail and vibrant color, making them ideal for archival use, display, or backup.

Our Photo Scanning Process

At DVD Your Memories San Diego, we follow a detailed, hands-on approach to ensure every photo is digitized with precision and care:

  • Initial Cleaning: Each photo is gently cleaned with compressed air to remove dust and particles before scanning. This step helps prevent imperfections from being captured in the digital image.
  • Flatbed Scanning: We use high-end, dedicated flatbed scanners, not cheap high-speed document scanners. This method prevents streaking, tearing, or image warping and ensures maximum sharpness and detail during the digital conversion.
  • Image Organization: All scanned images are named numerically (e.g., Vacation_001.jpg) and sorted into clearly labeled folders that follow the original photo organization. This makes your digital archive easy to navigate and reference.
  • Quality Assurance: After scanning, each image is inspected to ensure proper orientation without mirroring as well as scan quality. We check for accuracy and clarity so your final files are archive-ready.
  • Archival Storage: Completed scans are saved to 100-year archival-grade DVDs unless you request another format (such as USB, hard drive, or cloud upload). These discs offer industry-best durability for preserving your memories long into the future.

We never outsource and never cut corners, just professional photo scanning done locally in San Diego with care you can trust.

Choosing Between Manual Color Correction & Image Restoration Services

Our San Diego lab offers two powerful enhancement options to improve the look and quality of your digitized photos: Manual Color Correction and Image Restoration. Each service addresses different issues and is performed by hand by experienced technicians.

If you’re unsure which service suits your photos best, our technicians can assess your images and recommend the appropriate enhancement during your consultation.

Manual Color Correction Service

Manual Color Correction helps fix common color problems, such as unwanted color casts or faded tones. Our technicians manually evaluate the image’s important areas to reset true white and black points, restoring natural, accurate colors that automatic software cannot achieve. We evaluate the image based on the important data and disregarding things like backlighting from windows and such.

  • Fixes red, yellow, or other color casts.
  • Identifies the whitest and darkest pixels based on image content, ignoring glare or backlighting.
  • Restores natural color balance and brightness.
  • Suitable for photos that look discolored, too dark, or washed out.
  • Option to test on one or two images before full batch correction.

Image Restoration Service

Image Restoration digitally repairs physical damage and severe imperfections. This service can fix scratches, folds, tears, color blotches, fungus, and more. A particular concern for San Diegans might be a cherished humidity warped family photo.

Using professional software and advanced techniques, our team can even reconstruct missing portions based on other image data. Don’t worry, all the original data will be saved.

  • Repairs scratches, tears, folds, and stains.
  • Removes color blotches and fungus damage.
  • Rebuilds missing sections using reference data.
  • Preserves original data by saving unedited scans alongside restored versions.
  • Ideal for heavily damaged or deteriorated photos.

What Other Services Do You Offer For My Photos?

Create Slideshows From Your Photos

Once your photo scanning order is complete, you can transform your images into a personalized DVD slideshow. Choose from one of our basic or ideal packages, or sit down with our in-house editor to create a fully custom video. Incorporating your own images adds a personal, meaningful touch, perfect for events like anniversaries, memorials, or family reunions.

Contact Sheets

For large bulk photo scanning service orders, we offer the option of generating contact sheets. These sheets act as visual indexes, displaying 100 thumbnail-sized images per page. Contact sheets make it simple to browse your digitized old photos, locate specific images quickly, and navigate your collection, whether stored on a USB, DVD, or external hard drive. This added layer of organization is a helpful way to preserve family photos in a user-friendly format.

The Hidden Risks Of Cheap Scanning

Why We Don’t Use Document Scanners To Scan Photos

The short answer: document scanners don’t meet our quality standards for scanning photos.

Document scanners were originally built for office use to digitize large amounts of text documents and free up filing cabinet space quickly. As photo digitization became more popular, some scanning companies saw an opportunity to adapt this office equipment to handle photo collections. This gave rise to the era of low-cost, high-speed “shoebox” photo scanning services.

At DVD Your Memories, we explored the idea ourselves. We tested the Kodak Photo Scanning System s1220, excited by the potential to scan thousands of images in a fraction of the time. But after reviewing the results of our experiment, we immediately realized that the quality wasn’t even close to what we consider archival quality scanning. It simply wasn’t good enough for our clients’ irreplaceable memories.

Flatbed Scanners vs. Document Scanners

Flatbed scanners keep the photo completely stationary while a precision sensor moves beneath it. This controlled environment produces clean, sharp scans and minimizes distortion. In contrast, document scanners rapidly feed photos across a fixed sensor. This fast-feed method introduces several problems that compromise high-resolution photo scanning results.

  • RGB Streaking: Document scanners often cause red, green, or blue lines to appear across images. This happens when the moving photo drags dust on the glass. Flatbed scanners avoid this by keeping the photo stationary while the sensor moves.
  • Detail Loss In Dark Areas: Images scanned on document machines can show crisscross patterns or white interference in shadowed regions. The fast scan speed doesn’t allow enough time to capture subtle color and detail.
  • Risk Of Damage To Originals: Older or fragile prints can jam, crease, or tear when fed through a document scanner. This mechanical process puts your irreplaceable photos at unnecessary risk, before it could ever be scanned.

Take a look at the sample images below to see the difference between flatbed and document scanning in action. The left images were scanned using our high-end flatbed equipment. The right images were run through a document scanner, which is often used in low-cost bulk photo scanning services. The difference is clear.

At DVD Your Memories San Diego, we never use document scanners for any photo scanning orders. Our professional photo scanning process relies entirely on flatbed equipment to ensure every scan meets our standards for archival quality scanning and high-quality digital conversion.

Beware Of Companies Still Using Document Scanners

You should ask yourself if the deal is worth it if you see a company offering photo scanning in San Diego for just a few cents per print. Chances are, they’re using cheap document scanners or shipping your irreplaceable photos overseas.

Some companies still use this equipment to offer bulk deals. But preserving family photos isn’t something you want handled by cut corners and high-speed rollers. Your originals deserve better than assembly-line scanning.

At DVD Your Memories, all work is done locally, by hand, using flatbed scanners. We never outsource. We never feed your prints through risky machines. Our focus is always on quality, safety, and long-term preservation.
